About

The Light is Durham’s newest cultural destination, celebrating the Durham Light Infantry’s 250-year history through exhibitions, events and community activities, alongside a dynamic programme of changing gallery exhibitions exploring the world today.

Design Brief

We worked closely with the contractor to develop a lighting design for the museum, selecting fittings to complement the different areas and functions of the building.

Erco spotlights were specified within the gallery areas to provide focused illumination and highlight the museum displays, while Hacel fittings were used throughout the circulation areas to provide effective and comfortable general lighting.

One of the key challenges on the project was creating a decorative feature within the double-height atrium space. Working with Exenia, we developed a bespoke track and pendant solution incorporating decorative Bola fittings at different heights. This created a striking feature above the main entrance while providing functional illumination to the space.

In the external areas, we worked alongside Holophane to develop a lighting scheme using bollards and post-top luminaires to provide general illumination to the car park and pathways leading to the building. Wall-mounted fittings were also carefully positioned to provide additional illumination while ensuring they did not distract from the feature lighting visible externally through the building’s glazing.
