Project Overview
Holy Name Church in Newcastle required a lighting upgrade that improved the quality, flexibility and appearance of the existing installation while remaining sympathetic to the character of the building.
The project was delivered in collaboration with DSE Northern and lighting consultant Darren Renforth. Using the Park 3D process, the scheme combined 3D modelling, lighting design, visualisation and technical coordination to develop a practical and sensitive solution for the church interior.
The Lighting Design
The church’s original pendant lighting had previously been removed and replaced with downlights. While this provided a modern solution at the time, the downlight only scheme did not suit the architecture of the building and offered limited flexibility for the different ways the church is used.
The new design focused on restoring warmth, character and visual interest, while providing adaptable lighting for services, private prayer, community events, cleaning and special occasions.
A key part of the scheme was the Stations of the Cross along the side aisles. Carefully positioned surface mounted spotlights were used to give these framed holy images greater presence while maintaining a soft and sympathetic overall effect.
The lighting design also drew attention to the brick arches, altar area and timber ceiling, creating more depth and interest throughout the church.
Lighting Solution
The existing downlights were removed and replaced with track lighting, surface mounted spotlights and new eight light brass chandeliers.
The brass chandeliers reintroduced a traditional decorative feature to the church interior, restoring some of the character lost when the original pendant lighting was removed. Track lighting and spotlights provided focused illumination for key areas without overwhelming the wider space.
A Casambi wireless dimming system was incorporated to provide flexible scene control. This allows lighting levels to be adjusted for different activities without relying on one fixed setting, while reducing the need for complex control wiring within the existing building.
Outcome
The completed scheme replaces the previous downlight only installation with a more balanced and sympathetic lighting solution.
The new chandeliers bring warmth and character back into the church, while track and surface mounted spotlights provide practical illumination and focused feature lighting. The Stations of the Cross now have greater presence, key architectural details are better revealed, and the church can adapt its lighting to suit a range of uses.
