BIOS is an exciting new chapter for Teesside University, setting a benchmark for innovation in science and health education. Park Lighting Design was proud to bring this visionary building to life through a comprehensive lighting design that covered teaching areas, the café, plant rooms, and stairwells – creating a bright, cohesive environment for students and staff.
The Vision
The brief called for a state-of-the-art lighting system with wireless controls, central emergency testing, and minimal wiring. The goal was simple: combine advanced functionality with a clean, modern design that reflects the cutting-edge purpose of the building.
The Challenge
Working on a live campus site always brings logistical challenges, especially in a busy city location. With tight delivery slots and limited access, timing was everything. Thanks to clear communication, close collaboration, and a detailed delivery plan agreed by all parties, the project ran seamlessly from start to finish.
Lighting Design & Products
Manufacturers: Whitecroft, Thorlux
Key Products:
- Whitecroft Seline 2 as the main linear luminaire
- Thorlux Emergency Smart Scan
- Whitecroft Casambi via the Air Control wireless system
By using both Whitecroft and Thorlux, we achieved the perfect balance between performance, budget, and design consistency – ensuring the finished scheme delivered exceptional value without compromise.
Aesthetic Approach
A crisp white palette was chosen to echo the scientific focus of the labs. With white acoustic rafts, suspended luminaires running between them, and exposed ceilings, every detail worked together to create a seamless, contemporary look that feels bright, open, and inspiring.
The Results
- Smooth integration of the university’s existing Smart Scan emergency system
- Significant cost savings through a carefully considered product mix
- Minimal disruption to campus life thanks to phased, coordinated delivery
Project Success
Tendering began in 2022, with completion achieved in late 2023. Delivered on time, on budget, and beyond expectations – BIOS stands as a flagship building for Teesside University, showcasing how intelligent design and collaboration can transform learning environments.
