Lighting Innovation at New Heights: How Park Electrical Delivered Efficient, Safe, and Sustainable Solutions for SES Engineering on the SeaH Wind Project
Park Electrical Distributors recently undertook a major project in collaboration with its strategic partner, SES Engineering, to address the unique lighting requirements of a new C4-rated industrial building constructed with marine-grade steel – the SeaH Wind project, based in Teesside. SES turned to Park Electrical for expertise in designing and implementing a high-quality, efficient lighting system capable of withstanding the demands of a coastal environment. The result? An exceptional solution that met both sustainability standards and rigorous safety protocols, featuring UK-manufactured materials and an innovative approach to installation and controls.
Selecting the Best Lighting Solution
Testing and market research were essential to identify the most effective lighting options for the project. SES tasked Park with evaluating various products, requesting a selection of choices to identify the optimal balance of cost and performance. Park shortlisted four options from UK manufacturers to ensure quick access to replacements and align with SES’s sustainability goals. After thorough evaluation, Holophane lighting emerged as the preferred choice, known for its high efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and resilience in coastal environments—delivering the durability and value required for this project.
Meeting the Challenge of Extreme Height
The building’s considerable height presented a significant challenge, with some fittings positioned up to 37 metres above ground. Traditional installation methods would be risky, costly, and labour-intensive at this scale. Recognising this as a unique project, Park Electrical quickly worked to identify solutions that would meet SES’s goals for efficiency and safety.
While time savings are often a key priority in reducing costs, here, minimising risk for installers working at such heights was paramount. To address this, Park’s modular division, Modular Solutions, introduced an innovative DALI wiring harness. This modular harness system cut installation time by approximately 50%, significantly reducing both labour needs and the risks associated with extended work at high altitudes. By adopting this modular approach, Park delivered a streamlined installation that saved time and kept electricians safely within the required access limits.
Reliable Controls with Helvar
Selecting reliable control systems was another priority. In a building of this scale, at this height, it was essential to have equipment that could maintain stable control without frequent resets or address loss. For this, Helvar controls were chosen as the trusted system for both internal and external lighting management. With years of experience working with Helvar products, Park knew it could depend on these controls to function flawlessly at 45 metres—a height where manual adjustments or resets would be both costly and potentially unsafe. Helvar’s advanced system provided dependable functionality, with remote capabilities allowing on-site teams to make adjustments without hands-on troubleshooting.
Streamlined Installation and Effective Management
To further simplify the installation process, all lighting units were pre-flexed, reducing installation complexity and minimising additional work at height. In a project requiring tight organisation and meticulous oversight, Park delivered and stored components by reference and section, optimising both space and on-site logistics.
Spanning a total of 24 months, this project saw Park maintaining close collaboration with SES to ensure each phase, from planning and installation to final testing, progressed smoothly. With UK-based suppliers, sustainable practices, and inventive installation techniques, Park showcased its expertise in delivering high-performance, safe, and sustainable solutions for even the most complex projects.
A Partnership for Progress
This collaboration between Park Electrical and SES exemplifies the benefits of strategic partnerships and the power of innovative problem-solving in commercial lighting projects. Through advanced modular systems, sustainable sourcing, and reliable controls, Park has set a new standard for efficient and safe industrial lighting solutions.
